We’re delighted to share that Birling Estate is now a Partner Member of the North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve – a landmark step in recognising the national importance of this landscape and the collaborative work underway to restore it at scale.

The North Kent Woods and Downs NNR is one of England’s newest and most ambitious National Nature Reserves, bringing together landowners, conservation organisations and public bodies to create a joined-up approach to nature recovery across thousands of hectares of chalk grassland, ancient woodland and farmland. Unlike traditional single-site reserves, this is a landscape partnership – a recognition that wildlife does not respect boundaries, and that meaningful recovery depends on connectivity.

For Birling Estate, becoming a partner member reflects years of focused habitat management. Our chalk grasslands form part of a wider ecological network stretching across the Kent Downs, supporting specialist plants and invertebrates uniquely adapted to thin, lime-rich soils. These rare grasslands are among the most threatened habitats in Britain, and their restoration requires careful grazing, scrub control and long-term stewardship.

Our ancient woodlands, too, are an integral piece of the puzzle. Woodland management that enhances structural diversity, restores rides and glades, and strengthens hedgerow links contributes directly to the NNR’s ambition of building resilient habitats capable of supporting species such as dormice, woodland butterflies and declining songbirds.

Being part of the NNR is not about designation alone; it is about shared responsibility and collaboration. The partnership, supported by Natural England, aims to strengthen ecological connectivity, improve public access to nature, and inspire a deeper understanding of the value of this remarkable chalk and woodland landscape.

For us at Birling Estate, this is both an honour and a commitment. It reinforces our belief that landscape-scale conservation – working across boundaries and alongside neighbours – is the most effective way to reverse biodiversity loss and build resilience in the face of climate change.

We look forward to playing our part in the years ahead, contributing to research, habitat restoration and community engagement across the North Kent Woods and Downs. Together, we are helping shape a living, working landscape where nature can thrive once again. 🌱
