During 2020 we completed our strategic plan to set the direction for the next 15 years to 2035; when it will be the 600 year anniversary of the estate. It was an opportunity to articulate what we have been working towards for a number of years but had not put down in writing.

Our Core Purpose –  We believe in being a place where nature, people and enterprise flourish in harmony

Our Vision – To be home to a collection of inspiring places set within a regenerative estate.

Our Mission – To build a resilient business that will enhance the assets of the estate and create positive change.

We will do this through developing a diverse but complementary range of inclusive and sustainable brands that focus on wellness, craft and enjoyment of life in balance with nature. Creating amazing places and experiences to enrich life.

We will grow a resilient and profitable business with a strong culture, finding creative approaches to farming, forestry, tourism and enterprise. This will enable us to invest in the long-term improvement of natural capital and heritage as well as contributing to the wider community and global issues.

Everything we do will be viewed through a lens of the climate and biodiversity emergency, health & wellbeing, and culture & heritage. Providing positive impact either through our own operations or working to inspire others.

Doing it in harmony means blending contrasting elements to create something greater, it involves combining both collaboration and competition and speaks of an intrinsic quality of life.

We have identified 7 core goals that we will be working towards and reporting against each year.

PLACEMAKING – Developing the sense of place. A legible place with well-defined enterprise zones and connecting routes. Drawing on the heritage of the landscape and the community.

A FLOURISHING & RESILIENT BUSINESS – Everything we do is underpinned by having a strong business; one that has a real focus on the team and is financially resilient. This is what enables us to invest in conserving heritage, improving our natural assets and being able to provide opportunities for others such as jobs or time in nature.

A ROAD MAP FOR NET ZERO CARBON – We declare a climate emergency; the need to reduce carbon emissions is clear. We should be leading the way with action and inspiring others.

A REGENERATIVE APPROACH  – We are working toward regenerative farming, forestry and tourism. This means valuing and improving natural capital (soil/air/water/biodiversity); being an exemplar of environmental management and looking to improve rather than just minimise impact.

HEALTH & WELLBEING – THE NATURAL HEALTH SERVICE – There are huge mental and physical benefits to time spent in nature. We recognise this and will work to share what we have for the benefit of others.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT – We believe in the importance of community and will do what we can to help develop it. This includes the estate, local and wider community through our enterprises. Supporting the local economy and finding ways for them to benefit from the Estate.

GROWING AND MAKING: CHALK & CHESTNUT – The land gifts us raw materials and a place of inspiration. We will collaborate with others to create things from our land and to support local artisans and designer-makers.
