It’s been on the cards for a while, but I’m really proud to say that we have signed up Badgells Wood to 1% for the Planet.
1% for the Planet is a global organization that exists to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. It inspires businesses and individuals to support environmental non-profits through membership and everyday actions. Members donate 1% of their turnover to help tackle our planets most pressing environmental Issues.
We already invest annually in the continued health of the woodland within the campsite, ensuring the preservation of the biodiversity of the ancient woodland. But we felt with the Global Climate Crisis that we would like to expand our influence further afield.
Our goal is to plant at least one tree for every booking. We are now looking into the best gold-standard tree-planting charity partner to carry this out in the most suitable location – whether this be restoration of tropical rainforest or re-claiming the desert in sub-Saharan Africa.
There is a phrase I heard at the annual Forestry Conference in October 2021 that sums this up perfectly. “Tele-coupling – the way events of phenomenon in one corner of the world can have an impact far away, connecting or ‘coupling’ environmental and socio-economic systems to each other across space and time.”
Next time you stay, you’ll not only be helping provide employment and biodiversity improvements on our site but also elsewhere in the world where they are needed most. Wouldn’t it be amazing if together we could enable an area the size of the campsite to be planted on the other side of the world and looked after by those that can do it best.
