HOME-GROWN ENGLISH TIMBERS

BIRLING SAWMILL

We grow, process and mill all of the certified home-grown timber in-house on Birling Estate.

Our mission is to get quality home-grown timber into local markets; cutting down on transport, sequestering carbon and improving the biodiversity of the woodland through better management.

All of our woodlands are looked after in accordance with our Forestry Commission Approved Woodland Management Plan and are also certified by Grown in Britain.

Each plank can be supplied with a certificate of provenance, including the What3Words location where the tree grew and its age.

TIMBER DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

Our woodlands are owned and managed by Guy Nevill. After 20 years’ working as an environmental engineer he developed a long-standing interest in timber and sustainable construction.

He worked with leading architects on sustainable exemplar buildings such as The National Trust HQ, The Woodland Trust HQ, Worcester Hive Library and Keynsham Civic Offices.

We’ve constructed a children’s play area and an outdoor kitchen and event space at Badgells Wood using timber sourced and processed on the estate. The sawdust and shavings from our sawmill are used in the composting loos at our campsite – once composted down, this can be spread on the fields or used as a mulch for trees.

HOME GROWN HOUSE

The HomeGrownHouse was a research project addressing the limited use of locally sourced, small-diameter round wood in construction in the south east of England and focused on coppiced Sweet Chestnut timber for its natural durability and mechanical properties.

The first phase of the project investigated potential construction components and the second phase delivered a small cabin, using SIPs (structurally insulated panels).

It showcased the use of Sweet Chestnut and Ash in scalable housing construction, bringing more woods into management, aiding habitat restoration and boosting local economies.

We provided the Sweet Chestnut and Ash as raw materials, on-site sawmilling and construction space and now host the completed cabin, which will be available for holiday lettings on the Estate in due course.

We partnered with Grown in Britain and London Metropolitan School of Art, Architecture & Design with support from the Forestry Commission South-East Innovation Fund.
